What Can Miley Cyrus Teach Recruitment About Rebranding So the image of a nearly nude Miley Cyrus as she twerked her way, tongue out, through a performance at the MTV Awards, was shocking to say the least. Where was the sweet teen whose alter-ego was Hannah Montana? The show, and Mileys sexy new image, caused quite a commotion. And a bit like marmite, it seems people either love it or hate it. Either way, the stunt certainly got everyone talking, with all social media channels buzzing with the various opinions both positive and negative. With a 100% increase in followers on Twitter, a significantly higher search engine ranking and literally millions of YouTube views, revenue for the Miley Cyrus label was given a huge boost. And despite the fact that not all publicity was in favour of the star, in just one week her new track Wrecking Ball sold nearly 100,000 digital downloads, her Facebook page gained more than 226,000 new fans and her Twitter account attracted over 213,000 new followers. While discussions raged about the emotional wellbeing of the 21-year-old, those classifying Miley as yet another messed up child star, following in the troubled footsteps of Britney Spears and Lindsey Lohan, failed to consider it all from a somewhat different angle that this was perhaps one of the most elaborate re-branding stunts ever pulled Why re-brand? There were a number of reasons why Miley Cyrus and her team decided it was time to take action and re-brand. These include: She turned 21. The Hannah Montana brand portrayed her as young and innocent. The Hannah Montana followers had also come of age and were ready for a more adult image. As with all child stars, there comes a point at which they have to progress from child to adult. This nearly always requires a re-brand of some sort. The Hannah Montana image would not sustain Miley in the adult pop world alongside the eternal icons, such as Madonna. The re-brand of Miley Cyrus was perfectly planned and executed. It was strategic and smart, timed as it was to coincide with Miley coming of age. Miley and her team choose an international platform from which to present her new sexy image to the world. Effectively killing all assumptions that Miley was in any way like her innocent former alter-ego. While this served to push Miley forward to a new level and into a completely new market, it also burned all bridges for the multi-million dollar Hannah Montana label. From this there will definitely be no going back. Gone is the sweet Disney image and in its place something new entirely. So why was the re-brand of Miley Cyrus so successful? It seems Miley and her crew adhered to some tried and tested re-branding strategies. Other brands can learn some important lessons from these: Slow or explosive choose one method or the other. Mileys team chose the latter. Big time. Know your audience and target market inside out, including exactly how to get their attention. Build a brand identity around what sets you apart form the competition as a sex symbol in Mileys case Fill a void Miley satisfies the gap in the market for someone of her age and music genre. Develop a strong core brand message Mileys is to embrace what and who you are, a very powerful concept in the current political climate. Avoid diluting the brand or confusing the target audiences by eliminating unnecessary aspects of it. In Mileys case this was to say goodbye to Hannah Montana. For good. Develop a strategic plan and stick to it. The re-invention of Miley Cyrus was planned to the very last detail, from the timing, to the outfit, to the stage. Whether perceived by those who saw it as good or bad, it could not have been more memorable. Measure the impact and always gather as much feedback as possible. The long term implications might take some time to become apparent, but it is important to begin to develop a picture of how the new brand is being perceived and by whom. It was a 10 minute presentation about Shakespeare to a small group of students, and it was by far the most terrifying thing I had to do since I arrived at university; uncontrollable shaking hands, red faced and heart palpitating I stumbled through. Fast-forward five years, and I’m off this afternoon to present to over 100 students as part of my day job. If you told me at university that presenting would be a core part of my future job I would have laughed in your face. So how did I get to the place where I’m comfortable and confident in my ability? Practise! It’s like anything; if you try and try again you will improve. I got a part time job as a Student Ambassador at university, where I had to give prospective students campus tours, and deliver presentations in schools. Yes the first time was petrifying, but by the hundredth time I was well versed in what to say, and knew how to engage my audience. Take small steps: Becoming more confident won’t happen overnight, but proactively try to take small steps over the coming months and years. Rather than seeing the things that scare you as big unsurmountable obstacles, try and break them down into smaller goals. This small step could be anything from, ‘I’m going to put my hand up this lesson and contribute an idea in my class’ to ‘I’m going to join a society this year to meet new people and try something new.’ Do the things which scare you: It’s so easy to avoid things you don’t want to do. For example, say there’s a networking evening on for your course where you can meet alumni and chat to them about their careers. The thought of walking up to a stranger and asking them questions drives fear into your bones, and   you would much rather go home and watch TV, rather than face that scary prospect. Next time, have a go at tackling the obstacle head on even if it does scare you. It all comes back to practise, and you’ll never have chance to practise in such a safe environment, at university again. Don’t listen to the ‘self-talk’: ‘Are you mad, I can’t do that!’, ‘people are going to think my ideas are stupid’, ‘nobody will want to hear what I want to say’; sound familiar? We all have that little voice at the back of our minds who tells us we’re not good enough from time to time. It’s impossible to switch it off permanently, but we can ignore it for a while and hit the override button. Give it a go, and you might surprise yourself! Failure: So you step out your comfort zone and put yourself out there, but then it all goes wrong and you feel like you are back to square one. Even though it feels awful in the moment, believe me, you are making progress. In that failure, you can learn about how to approach the situation differently next time. The hardest part can be picking yourself back up again, but push through the fear and if at first you do not succeed, try and try again! With a (hopefully) generous Christmas offering paired with a hearty student loan freshly deposited in your bank account, the beginning of January is one of the few times of year when your balance will likely be out of the red and into the black no matter how momentarily. But, with sales rife and catch-ups with friends a necessity after the break, its all too easy to blow it all and be back to a life beans on toast with the heating off after no time at all. Before you rush out to find the next New Year ‘bargain’, take five minutes to consider our 5 top money saving tips that anyone (yes, we mean anyone) can follow to keep a healthy bank balance in 2018.   Perspective Spending is all a matter of perspective, and sometimes you have to change that perspective to get the most out of your money. If you see a lump sum in your bank account and get pound signs in your eyes, you’re just going to go out and blow it all in an afternoon. You’ll indulge on eating out order more takeaways buy one too many rounds on a night out and then it’ll be gone. I think about money in terms of specific items â€" meaning, I think of every purchase over £10 in terms of bottles of wine. Now, bear with me â€" it makes sense. If I see a top in a sale for £25, and I kind of like it (mostly because it used to be £50), but I know I’ll hardly wear it, I think ‘I could buy 4 bottles of wine for that, and I’ll probably not wear it more than 4 times’. It doesn’t have to be wine, just find something that you like â€" chocolate, cinema tickets, club entry â€" and think about how many of each you could have for the cost of that one item. It’s simple, but it’s a lifesaver!   £5 per week We all spend at least £5 a week that we don’t need to, so why not put away that much each week for safe keeping. It’s a miniscule amount, you’re not going to miss it, and it means you’ll have a nice little ‘nest egg’ by the end of the year. If you do it religiously, by the end of the year you’ll have a nice £260!   Offers! I’m not one for buying more food than I need, but I’m also not one to miss out on a bargain. Especially if it works out better in the long run! So often, we’ll find something that we buy every week reduced by 50% in the supermarket and still only buy one of them â€" what’s that about?! Especially when it comes to non-perishable items, it makes no sense whatsoever! Think about it in terms of coffee: say you go through a jar each week, and its reduced from £4 to £2, you could buy a month’s supply for £8 instead of the usual £16! Bargain! And, when it comes round to you needing to buy more, it’ll probably be back on offer. So, its win-win really! Of course, then the trick is to not spend the money you’ve saved on things you don’t usually buy, otherwise you just end up spending more #guilty “Do I really need this” We’ve all been shopping with our parents, loaded up the basket, and gone in a total huff when asked, “do you really need all that?” Well, that’s fine when it’s the bank of mum and dad, but when you’re forking out the money yourself, you’ve got to be that little voice in your head. Not just high street shopping trips, the weekly food shop can be a killer for your bank balance, especially if you over indulge. The trick is to only buy what you need â€" no matter how much you want everything down the snack aisle. You’re not at home anymore, and you’re not going to have mum’s banquet every night. Stick to meat and a few veg items per week. You can freeze different meats, so you have a variety, and rotate the veg so you have something different each night. It might sound boring, but when you’ve money left over for an extra night out you’ll soon be thankful! Sell it At the end of the semester, it can be tempting to throw out all of the books that you ‘read’ and never think of those modules again. However, think of how much you spent on them, and how little you used them â€" you might as well get something back! With social media, its easier than ever to sell your old books to other students. If your course has a Facebook group, post them on there. If no one wants them, wait until the beginning of next year when the course starts up again. We all love a bargain, so work out how much they’d cost new online, minus a couple of pounds, and sell them as a bundle. Someone will snatch them up! If all else fails, just stick them on eBay! You may need to use a functional resume, a professional or executive resume, or you may need to use a curriculum vitae. A curriculum vitae is typically used when you: Are applying for an academic position or a research fellowship You have a lot of publishing credits to your name The company you are applying for asks for a more detailed history of your professional accomplishments If you are in one of these positions, then you need to ensure that your CV is complete. The main difference between a resume and a CV is the detail included in a CV. This means that a CV is going to be much longer. A complete curriculum vitae should include all publications in which youve been published and all relevant training. You should also include a full work history even if it spans across twenty or thirty years. Obviously having all this information will make your CV particularly lengthy. If your CV is not three or more pages, it is likely that you do not have all the information you need to present. Go through your entire career and education history to ensure you have all the information. Hopefully, you have kept complete records so that you know exactly what to put into your CV and the details about each project, publishing, and job. When you have all the details put into your curriculum vitae it will be long, but dont worry, a CV should be that long in order for it to be complete and professional.
